From Turning Pages to Taking Steps: Andrea’s Journey with MORA Day Support Services

Every morning at MORA Day Support Services, Andrea could be found in the same place.

MORA Day Support Services is a recreation based program designed for adults with high needs disabilities. Each day is filled with opportunities for participants to build relationships, stay active, explore the community, and engage in meaningful activities at their own pace.

For Andrea, those opportunities once felt out of reach.

She sat at a table with a neat stack of magazines beside her, slowly turning each page. Fashion spreads, travel destinations, recipes, and beautiful photographs captured her attention. While others participated in activities throughout the day, Andrea stayed in her familiar spot, quietly immersed in the pages before her.

When staff invited her to join an art project, music group, or game, she would offer a gentle smile and softly shake her head before returning to her magazines.

Over time, walking had become increasingly difficult for Andrea. What began as occasional hesitation eventually led to relying on a wheelchair. As her mobility declined, so did her willingness to participate. Activities felt overwhelming, and connecting with others seemed just out of reach.

But the team at MORA Day Support Services saw something different.

They didn’t see someone who had given up. They saw someone who simply needed support, encouragement, and the opportunity to rediscover what she was capable of.

The journey began with small moments. Staff gently encouraged Andrea to stand, staying close as she worked to rebuild her confidence. The first attempts were slow and cautious, but they celebrated every success. First she stood. Then she stood a little longer. Before long, she was taking small, determined steps.

Each milestone mattered. As Andrea’s confidence grew, staff invited her to join community outings. They made sure she felt safe and supported while encouraging her to experience the world beyond the walls of MORA Day Support Services.

At the park, Andrea stayed close to a bench during her first visit, quietly watching others walk along the paths. Gradually, she joined them. A few steps became a short walk. Short walks became longer ones. The paths that once felt out of reach became places she could enjoy again.

Her world was growing larger with every step.

Back at MORA Day Support Services, her days began to change in other ways, too.

Andrea still loved her magazines, but now they became a way to connect with others instead of a place to retreat. She would invite staff to sit with her, pointing to photos and articles that caught her attention. Although words weren’t always necessary, her expressions, gestures, and enthusiasm spoke volumes.

Afternoons that were once quiet became filled with conversation, laughter, and meaningful connections.Andrea regained much more than the ability to walk. She rediscovered confidence, independence, and the joy of being part of a community. With patience, encouragement, and unwavering belief from the MORA Day Support Services team, she found herself participating in life again.

Today, Andrea still enjoys flipping through her favorite magazines, but they are only one part of her day. She spends more time moving, exploring, and engaging with the people around her than ever before.

Her story is a reminder that progress often begins with one small step and someone who believes in your potential.
