I Want to Catch a Fish: Nick’s Story

Nick’s main goal at Discover Summer Camp was to catch a fish. He often fixated on a single activity, and thanks to the camp’s 1:2 staff-to-camper ratio, his dream was fully supported. Each day, staff encouraged Nick by helping him create fishing poles and nets from materials found at Schutz Lake during waterfront time.

Understanding the individual dreams and needs of campers at Discover Summer, allows us to provide authentic person-centered care. At camp we prioritize the child’s goals rather than forcing them to adapt to a rigid schedule. Our trained staff is flexible and accommodating, ensuring every child can succeed. By the end of camp, Nick caught a fish!  He proudly shared his achievement with everyone.

Unlike many summer camps that adhere to strict agendas, Discover Summer Camp tailors experiences to meet the unique needs of children with Autism. Our specially trained counselors adapt plans to ensure each camper thrives in their own way.
