Sometimes the best measure of a successful day isn’t perfect weather. It’s the smiles, the teamwork, and the confidence that grows along the way.
Recently, our Discover Summer kids spent a day at Lake Auburn with the Outdoor Recreation School at Three Rivers Park District. While the wind made canoeing more challenging than expected, it didn’t stop our kids from embracing the adventure.
Instead, it became an opportunity to learn as our kids practiced paddling techniques, worked together as teams, and even powered their canoes into the middle of the lake despite the strong wind. It wasn’t the experience anyone had originally planned, but it became one that everyone will remember.
The day ended with another highlight: fishing. Fish were caught, cheers echoed across the shoreline, and our kids celebrated every success, big and small.
After the trip, we received a note from Recreation Program Specialist Deb Malmon that perfectly captured what makes Discover Summer so special.
“It wasn’t a perfect day for canoeing, but your team and our team made it work. Fishing was a big win, with so many fish caught, so many smiles and as always, so much support and enthusiasm for the kids from you all. I hope the families truly know how much patience, attention and care you provide these kids. As a mom with a kid with a cognitive disability, it always makes me extra proud to work with you all.”
Her words are a testament not only to the dedication of our staff but also to the incredible young people who participate in Discover Summer. Every outing is designed to help youth with disabilities build confidence, develop new skills, and experience the same adventures every child deserves.
Whether they’re paddling across a lake, casting a fishing line, exploring a park, or simply encouraging a friend, Discover Summer kids are learning that they are capable of more than they imagined.
Deb also recognized something that often goes unseen. Our staff adapted throughout the day, remaining flexible, patient, and encouraging as conditions changed. That ability to meet each child where they are is at the heart of Discover Summer.
Programs like this are made possible through strong community partnerships and the shared belief that every child deserves opportunities to learn, grow, and create lasting memories.

Discover Summer Day Program
Discover Summer is a weeklong daytime program for youth ages 8–17 with a diagnosed disability, offering meaningful opportunities to build skills, confidence, and independence while having fun. Located at Mount Olivet Rolling Acres in Victoria, MN, on scenic Schutz Lake, participants enjoy adaptive activities, nature exploration, pontoon rides, fishing, swimming, paddle boating, creative arts, games, and more. Small group sizes and a 1:2 staff-to-participant ratio allow for individualized, person-centered support. With trained staff, on-site nursing support, and engaging community experiences, Discover Summer creates a safe, inclusive environment where youth can try new things, build relationships, develop skills, and enjoy an unforgettable summer.
