The Transformative Power of Community Engagement

By Sarah Bue, Program Coordinator

Life at the Cottages can be fast-paced and full of demands. There are routines to follow, appointments to keep, and goals to meet. As a leader supporting adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities, I often find myself focused on keeping everything running smoothly. But I’ve learned that some of the most meaningful moments, for both the people I support and for me, happen outside the walls of the cottage, when we’re out in the community, sharing real experiences together.

A Change of Scenery, a New Kind of Connection

Stepping into the community brings something different. Whether we’re walking in the park, visiting a local fair, or just enjoying a quiet lunch, these outings offer a break from the usual routine. For the individuals I support, they open the door to new sights, sounds, and experiences. For me, they create space to connect, not just as a leader, but as a fellow person sharing in something meaningful.

Steve wanted to pick flowers for a dear friend, so Steve and I went on a walk to do so. Steve was so excited to give the flowers to her. It was a small act, but one filled with purpose, tenderness, and thoughtfulness. These are the kinds of moments where relationships deepen naturally.

Building Relationships Through Shared Moments

Something powerful happens when we’re out together. The dynamic shifts. I’m not just the staff member or the Program Coordinator. I’m someone walking beside them, participating in the same experience. That simple shift builds trust. We begin to see each other differently—more fully. I learn more about their personalities, preferences, and goals. And they see that I value their company, not just their care needs.

One day while out on a pontoon ride, Brad really wanted to drive the pontoon, so Nurse Megan and I made that happen. His joy in that moment wasn’t just about steering a boat, it was about trust, freedom, and being seen. (See picture!)

Encouraging Confidence and Growth

When we step into the community, it’s also an opportunity for individuals to grow. Trying something new like ordering food, watching a performance, or meeting new people, can be a big deal. I’ve witnessed people I serve step outside their comfort zones and shine. Someone quiet might become more expressive. Someone uncertain might take the lead. These moments build confidence and show that they are capable, valued members of the wider world.

One of my most cherished work outings was an evening with Mark at Chanhassen Dinner Theatres to see Grease. More than just an amazing show full of classic tunes that made us want to dance in our seats, it was a night of connection and care. Mark brought his light and laughter to every moment. The theater’s welcoming atmosphere made the experience even more special—accessible, inclusive, and joyful. It wasn’t just entertainment. It was about being present with Mark, seeing him light up, and knowing the experience made a difference for him. (see pic)

Lessons in Leadership

These experiences shape me as a leader, too. They remind me that leadership isn’t about control or direction. It’s about listening, supporting, and recognizing each person’s potential. Community outings give me fresh perspective. They teach me to slow down, to meet people where they are, and to lead with empathy and respect. They make me better at what I do.

I used to be the planner, always focused on structure and logistics. But over time, I’ve let go of that a bit. One weekend, nothing went according to plan. Our paddle boat cruise got rained out, literally getting stuck in the mud. However, we ended up spending hours telling stories, laughing, and just being present. That taught me more about connection than any perfectly executed schedule ever could.

These moments, raw, unpolished, and unforgettable, are what make our time at the cottage special. It’s not about having the perfect outing. It’s about the conversations around it, the transformations within it, and the shared memories that keep us coming back.

Memories That Last

The memories we create together stay with us. We talk about them for weeks. We laugh, reflect, and start looking forward to the next adventure. These moments aren’t just fun; they’re meaningful. They reinforce our bond and show us what’s possible when we step outside the ordinary and truly engage with one another.

Whether it’s a spontaneous walk to pick flowers, an unexpected rainstorm that turns into a storytelling circle, or a dinner theatre that lights up someone’s heart—these are the stories we carry. These are the shared experiences that turn daily care into meaningful connection.

Leading with Purpose

Supporting adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities is about more than daily care. It’s about creating opportunities, building trust, and helping each person live a life filled with choice, dignity, and connection. Taking time to be in the community together helps us do all of that and more.

When we share these experiences, we grow, individually and together. We remind each other that we all belong, that we all have something to offer, and that meaningful connection can happen anywhere.

Let’s keep showing up for those moments. They matter.
