Maddie communicated differently from her peers, often repeating phrases from Disney shows or about Joe Mauer, rather than directly engaging with her Discover Summer Camp counselors and fellow campers. Recognizing Maddie’s interests, the counselors began to connect with her about her favorite topics: Disney shows (especially iCarly) and Joe Mauer. 

As they engaged with her, Maddie began responding to questions, marking a significant breakthrough. One counselor celebrated when Maddie expressed her desire for “ketchup and mustard” on her hamburger, a moment that highlighted her growing communication. Another counselor noted that Maddie began stand closer to staff and “looked them in their eyes and smiled,” demonstrating that she was feeling accepted and valued. Soon, Maddie began to participate in activities, in her own unique way, and take in all that Discover Summer Camp had to offer. 

At Discover Summer Camp, our philosophy is to meet kids where they are. If a child prefers discussing iCarly or Joe Mauer, our counselors embrace that. With extensive training, they understand the behaviors associated with autism and use tailored approaches to foster connections with each child.
